The Gift That Lives On
When I first published Milemarkers, my vision was simple: to create an easy way to capture thoughts, memories, and the moments that matter most. Writing things down not only invites reflection—it creates a lasting gift, a legacy for those who one day get to read your words.
I’ve always believed in the power of journaling, but I experienced it in a profound way last week when my mother passed away. My sister handed me Mom’s journal, and as I turned the pages, I saw her thoughts and stories written in her own words. It was emotional. It was a treasure I will cherish forever.
Even more powerful was the moment I walked into her bedroom and saw family members gathered, reading her words aloud. They smiled, cried, laughed, and remembered together. In those moments, we felt her presence. We could hear her voice. That’s the true gift of a journal—it allows us to stay connected long after someone is gone.
Here are just a few of Mom’s entries that touched me:
August 23, 2019 - “Sewed most of the day - monogram towels.”
March 13, 2020 – “Bowled 170-170-113. Won 3.”
March 17, 2020 – “Coronavirus. Fixed lunch for Deanna’s family and Peggy. Cherry pie and ice cream for dessert.”
March 17, 2022 – “Did my blood test today. Mom’s been gone since 1998 and still miss my best friend - 24 years!!!
At the end of each chapter in Milemarkers, there are many reflection questions. Mom answered them too - here are a few that I treasure:
How many times have you moved? “Edmond to Piedmont to Jones to Edmond to Seminole to Oklahoma City. That’s enough!”
My first car: Volkswagen.
My favorite advice: “Be kind to everyone.”
These little snapshots of her life are priceless. They remind me that journaling is more than just writing—it’s one of the most powerful ways we can hand down wisdom, humor, and memories to our children, grandchildren, or anyone we love. They will treasure it.
Now is the time to start writing your story in Milemarkers, and pick up a copy for a friend - it will be a gift for everyone and a treasure to hear the greatest story ever told.
Quote of the Day: “You do not realize what I am doing, but later you will understand.” John 13:7
