Mobility Monday: 3 Things To Know When Moving Talent This Summer!
If you are responsible for relocating talent, you are probably aware of peak moving season… and it’s here. May through September, when nearly 70% of all relocations take place as families prepare for summer transitions and new beginnings. Moving is consistently ranked as one of life’s most stressful events, which is why communication, planning, and partnerships matter more than ever during peak season. This week, I’ll share three things to help you and your team create a better moving experience ahead.
Summer remains the busiest relocation period of the year, with the End of May, June, July, and August consistently ranking as the top moving months across the country.
Moving capacity tightens quickly. Early planning is critical and scheduling can make the difference between a smooth relocation experience and frustration with unnecessary delays. The moving survey should be completed at least 3-6 weeks out and reservations at least 3 weeks prior to loading with more notice in some places.
Moving Scams are real. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration receives thousands of household goods moving complaints each year. Beware – especially during peak when moving SCAMS have their highest visibility.
Every year, I receive calls from people who selected a moving broker based on a low price or provided their employee a lump sum cash option for the move… only to later be asked for thousands more or risk having their belongings placed into storage.
One of the biggest red flags? A deposit requirement. Reputable household goods movers should never require a deposit to reserve your move dates.
Most of these situations share the same warning signs:
No virtual or in-home survey was completed
The “estimate” was based only on a phone call or inventory sheet
Additional charges appeared after loading for packing, then again for weight
A recent example from a friend that called me prior to delivery:
Initial estimate: $5,000
Revised after loading: $7,000
Before delivery: $17,000 > from $5,000 to $17,000 just like that!
A professional survey matters. Experienced surveyors ask the right questions to ensure items are properly accounted for, packed, wrapped, protected, and accurately estimated before moving day arrives. This is the beginning of a successful relocation.
Today, more companies are focusing on the employee experience during relocation, recognizing that a successful move can directly impact retention, engagement, and productivity. A direct partnership with the household goods moving partner will help you create a better experience for the candidate to get the move started right and have a personal guide through the process from packing to delivery!

Quote of the Day:
“How do you give the employee the best experience? At the end of the day, the household goods is the #1 thing that makes or breaks your relocation program.” -Jack Jampel, Mobility Leader at Stryker on Life in the Leadership Lane Podcast Ep 132.
