How was your year?
by Bruce Wayne Waller (541 words | 4.3 minutes)
It was a question that made me pause.
If you focus on just one area of my goals, say, the numbers… you might say it was a good year. Not great, but good. Interest rates remain high for home purchases, remote work is here to stay, and corporations are relocating people less frequently.
But when you look beyond the numbers, you see a very different picture.
You see a great year, because beyond the metrics lies the true significance:
Speaking to more than 2,500 HR, Talent Acquisition, Sales, and Mobility professionals across the U.S.
Celebrating 40 years of marriage with my college sweetheart
Helping hundreds of families relocate across town and around the world
Supporting corporate office moves within Dallas and across the U.S.
Receiving my first WERC Meritorious Award and my 5th President’s Club recognition
Life in the Leadership Lane podcast being recognized as a Top Texas Leadership Podcast
Spending precious time with my mom this summer before she went to heaven
Celebrating my birthday with my children in Denver, Colorado
Completing my 21st year with The Armstrong Company
Recorded my 250th podcast episode since April 2020.
Created so many fun selfie’s moments during meetings and conferences,
And so much more…
That reflection led me to ask others the same question: How was your year?
The answers ranged from “It was good” to “It was okay” to “We crushed it.”
So how do you define what a great year looks like?
If it’s only by the numbers, you may find yourself in a very different place. But if you look beyond the numbers, you’re likely telling a richer story. I love hearing someone say they’re “crushing it,” because what they’re really saying is, “We’re making an impact.”
Crushing it means momentum.
Crushing it means connection.
Crushing it goes beyond success.
I recently watched my favorite football team fall short in the college football playoffs. Many would say they only had a “good” year because they didn’t win the championship. But look at all the games they won to even get there. They crushed it.
Maybe you didn’t get that promotion or land a new job this year, but if you look beyond success, you might see that you encouraged someone else while waiting for your next role. They would say you crushed it.
Maybe you worked on you, got in better shape, learned a new skill, or spent more time with family to prepare for what’s next. That’s crushing it.
Maybe you changed or added habits that moved your company or career forward. That’s crushing it.
Or maybe it’s time to start… If you look for the good, you will see the good.
So what will 2026 look like 12 months from now? How are you going to crush it?
Start planning now:
What trip(s) will you take?
What certification or class will you sign up for?
What association will you join or volunteer with?
What new habits will you add to your life?
Crushing it starts with intentional planning. And if you need someone to collaborate with along the way, reach out, I’d be glad to help you crush it in the new year.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas holiday and a healthy and prosperous new year ahead.
Quote of the Day: Define Success or it will define you.
