Smart Moving Tips
-
Plan your move date.
Plan Ahead – 4-6 weeks is recommended. Summer
is the busiest time of the year, along with the first and end of each month.
The more notice that you can provide, the better chance of you getting the
moving date that you need.
-
Find a professional Mover.
It is good to start by asking your friends about
their previous experiences with the movers they have used. You can also check
with the Better Business Bureau in your area.
-
Be careful when using internet referrals.
Never rely on an estimate over
the phone, or internet. Beware of SCAM movers.
-
Understand the basics.
Rates and charges, movers liability, estimating
requirements, pick up and delivery, and claim process.
-
Get a good estimate.
Ask mover to provide you with a written estimate.
Help the mover calculate the cost by showing them everything you want to move.
Also, don't forget the attic items. Most movers offer two types of estimates:
Binding, and Non-Binding. Not-to-Exceed estimates are also available as an
extension of binding.
-
Adequately insure your goods.
Two options available are Released Value @
.60 per lb., and Full replacement value.
-
Ask about payment options.
It is customary for movers to accept a credit
card, certified check, or money order before delivery.
-
Be present when goods are packed.
While packing yourself will save you
money, you will want to ask your mover about liability.
-
Moving Day Must Do's...
Discuss delivery arrangements with driver, Read
bill of lading (contract) before you sign it. Let your mover know how to reach
you at destination.
-
Report loss or damage promptly.
If any of your household goods are
damaged, report the facts promptly and in detail on the van driver's copy
(original) of the inventory sheet before you sign it.
