Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it important to use a Certified Moving Consultant - CMC?

A salesperson who is a "CMC" is someone who has received a Certified Moving Consultant credential. The CMC credential has come to represent a fundamental competency and adherence to ethical conduct of the sales force for the Household Goods Moving & Storage Industry. In dealing with a CMC while planning your move, you can be assured that you are working with a knowledgeable sales consultant who is committed to providing excellent and fair service.

  • Do I really need a moving survey?

Yes – Every home is unique. The survey is used to determine the cost of the move, and the amount of space needed for the moving van. It is also important to determine the number of movers needed, what type of packing materials, as well as the understanding the access available for the moving van. The surveyor needs to visually see the items you are moving to give you an accurate estimate. Phone estimates are also used when needed.

  • How much does a professional move cost?

Whether you are moving locally, long distance, or across the world, move costs are calculated by the volume and weight you are moving, as well as the distance. Local moving costs are generally calculated by the hour, while long distance moves are calculated by mileage and weight.  You can discuss ways of reducing your moving costs with your CMC during the move survey. As an example, a family might have a garage sale before moving day - to eliminate some of the volume and weight before loading items on the moving van.

  • Are there going to be any hidden charges?

In May of 2004, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has issued new consumer regulations addressing additional service charges at destination. Movers are now required to provide the consumer a copy of Additional Service Charges form to sign. This information is for the consumer to be aware of any possible additional service charges at destination. Example; storage, waiting time, and shuttle service.
